5 After 5, Favorite Presidents

Does President's Day mean a day off school or work in your area, or do things just plow full-steam ahead, as usual?

Regardless of whether you catch a break or not, join the fun as I share my favorite U.S. Presidents - and let me know yours, while you're here!

It's time for another round of 5 After 5!  In case you missed it, last week's list was ways to show your spouse love and if you're new to this series, you can read more about it here - then catch up on all the old editions here.

Today I've got my list of 5 to share, as well as next week's topic for you to stew about over the upcoming days.

And this series is a link party, so be sure to scroll down and join in all the fun with us this week!

List 5 of your favorite Presidents

President's Day - do Honest Abe and the Father of Our Country make your list, or is your favorite more of a character like mine is?

1. Thomas Jefferson

While it's true he possessed the same mutated gene that I do (resulting in coppery locks), this Renaissance Man became my favorite President way back in 3rd grade when I visited this place:

There are several interesting facts that you'll learn if you ever take a tour of Monticello, but what stuck with me for all these years was the Great Clock - and specifically those cannonball-like weights that descend through the floor and down into the cellar.

2.  Jefferson Davis

While I'm certainly from The South, I'm not some Confederacy-crazed gal.

My dad's mom was a Davis and we're supposedly somehow related to this President of the Confederacy, so I guess that made him at least moderately more interesting to me growing up.

That same trip in 3rd grade took us to visit the Confederate White House in Richmond, Virginia, where I learned that one of Davis's sons, Little Joe, died there at age 5 when he fell off the porch.

Stuff like that really sticks in a 9-yr-old's mind, so as a result, so did this President.

3.  William Henry Harrison

Because I figure any President who chooses to keep a crazy GOAT for a pet has to be a pretty fun guy!

4.  Woodrow Wilson

Because he signed the bill that established one of my favorite things about our country: the National Park Service.

(He's also the most-educated U.S. President, being the only one with an earned PhD.)

5.  FDR

Because he created the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and Works Progress Administration (WPA), which built so much of the infrastructure of our National Parks (see #4).

Also, my dad and I share an inside joke, which refers to our tour guide at a CCC museum we once visited together: "The CCs were the singles and the WPs were the marrieds"

I know you totally won't get that, since you can't hear the crotchety old park ranger's inflection as he said that line and it probably wouldn't have thrown you into the fit of giggles my dad and I shared all day long after our little tour, but it just makes me smile to think of FDR and his "CCs" and "WPs" and that day with my dad.

See? I promised you this list wouldn't be political.

My favorites all have to do with family memories, weird quirks (GOAT!) or connections to something about this country that I love.

And those are probably all things that we can vote to agree on!

For next week:

List 5 things to give up for Lent

Do you follow this practice? Give up anything unique? I've heard some pretty strange choices over the years, so I'm anxious to hear yours...

And now, here's this week's link party!  Another fabulous blogger has teamed up with me to create a list of five each week and we hope that you'll join us, too!

That's right, every post will be read, pinned and tweeted!

Every Saturday, just stop by one of our blogs to add your own list of five, then pop over and read as many other posts as you're able to each week - treat it like a true party and really mix it up and mingle with our fun little community!

The rules are simple:  just write your own list following the prompt each week (feel free to interpret it loosely - or in a unique way!), follow both of the hosts on the social media channel of your choice, and then get into the spirit of the party by grabbing your favorite beverage or snack and reading the lists of the other party-goers.

Your Hosts:

Lisa, at Syncopated MamaFacebook // Twitter // Pinterest // Google+ // Bloglovin'
Samantha, at Motivated DaysTwitter // Pinterest // Google+

What's your list?  I'd love to hear!  Either leave a comment below or email me at lisahealy (at) outlook (dot) com.

Also, if you don't want to miss a single minute of fun around here, be sure to sign up for free updates and then look forward to having each post delivered right to your inbox!
