My bloggy pal Hilary over at Raising Fairies and Knights started a fun Monthly Crafting Book Club - a challenge to create activities to go along with some of the most beloved children's books.

We had some great fun last year (see links at the end) and have continued the fun:

January - Ladybug Girl Addition Bugs
February - Giraffes Can't Dance Roll-a-Dance Die
March - How Do Dinosaurs...Social Skills Game
April - The Very Hungry Caterpillar Box
May - Unique Nature Creations

This month, our little group decided to think pink and focus on this book:

Pinkalicious

I can see how this book would be a huge hit with so many girls -- it seems like pink and purple are the top favorite colors amongst the female set.

And even though Gv's favorite color is red, she's still girly enough to enjoy a book centered around a gal whose day turns pink as a result of eating too many rose-colored cupcakes.

I'd been familiar with this book title from my classroom, but I'd never actually read it before.

One thing that stood out to me about it was the mixed-media illustrations:

Her wings look like lace; her shoes look like glitter.

Those illustrations became our inspiration for this month's book activity and we decided to make a bit of collage art.

First, we grabbed a coloring book that had large, simple pictures.

A great coloring book from the local dollar store.

Then we rustled up some catalogs (you could also use magazines) and found a pair of scissors.

We love shopping with these catalogs, but then also love using the old editions as craft supplies!

Finally, we cut out scraps of paper from the catalogs and then glued them into the spaces instead of coloring them.

We actually filled up more of the picture than I expected we would, even though we still pooped out before finishing all of the details.

G had a great suggestion to make everything the same color, like in Pinkalicious, but although we started out by making the mermaid all red, Gv changed her mind partway through to include all sorts of colors.

This project took a long time, but we were really happy with how it turned out.

Sometimes you have to think outside of the (crayon) box to creatively color a page!

I'd never thought of "coloring" a page with paper scraps before, but I foresee many collage projects being completed in this same manner in the future!

Have you ever thought about "coloring" with paper like this?  I'd love to hear!  Either leave a comment below or email me at lisahealy (at) outlook (dot) com.
