Friday Frivolity - Ways to Date Your Mate

It's time for this week's edition of Friday Frivolity - the blog party for all things fun, funny, hopeful & happy!

Just wait until you see what we dug up for this week's theme...

At last week's party, we shared our favorite nursery rhymes.

May is Date Your Mate Month, so we're sharing our favorite ways to keep the spark alive.

I tend to give G homemade gifts for our anniversary that help us do this, so most of my favorite ways focus on those:

1. Customized Hubby Gift

This little calendar was one of the first things I gave G. It included all the specific festivals and events that I knew would be happening in our area so that when we were up for an activity, we could just check the date and head out the door -- no searching online for something to do!

I also added in a list of other potential activities for each month of the year, like camping, visiting a state park, or exploring a local museum, so that we always had plenty of resources to choose from to fit our mood.

2. A Year of Fun

We actually gave this gift to every couple we knew one year for Christmas and it was a huge hit. There's an envelope to open each month to learn what the special activity will be. These are all low-cost ideas and some months even have a bonus package to unwrap to add to the fun!

3. Passport to Fun

If you've been a reader around here for very long, then I know you're familiar with this one. Each month we'd "travel" to a new country to explore all the sights, sounds, foods and other activities I could come up with from what we already had on hand.

We kept it up for two solid years and it was a load of fun!

4. Love Jars

As I started spending more time at the rink, our schedule started to feel overwhelming, so we needed something flexible and easy to turn to whenever we had some extra time.

This jars have been the perfect resource and one we'll be sticking with until things calm down a bit and we have more time.

5. Reading Books Together

Come on, you can't be all that surprised to learn that our book-crazed selves even bring reading into our romantic life, can you?

We've gone through lots of books together as a couple, breaking them into little pieces over time. Sometimes the two of us do a lot of eye-rolling at the questions and activities included in them, but we always push through because the discussions we have as a result are usually worthwhile.

Plus, we're constantly modifying these things to make them our own -- using the books as a tool and jumping-off place, rather than following them militantly.

Some of the books we've used in the past that you might want to check out include The 5 Love Languages, 7 Principles for Making Marriage Work, Making Love Last Forever & The Keys to Growing in Love, Wild at Heart, His Needs, Her Needs5 Steps to Romantic Love.

Now time for the new stuff!
